NASA Grant at Randolph

This Web page is designed to show some of the great things that are happening at Randolph School, thanks to the NASA aerospace grant, that has benefited 10 CPS schools for the past 3 years. A big thank you to the Honorable Jesse Jackson Jr. for helping the students of Chicago get this grant.

Field Trips

On April 28, Aerospace students visited the University of Chicago and had lunch with scientists after visiting Paul Sereno's Dinosaur lab. May 23 we toured Chicago on this Trolley.

We saw the Mercury and Apollo Space crafts on May 17 at the Museum of Science and Industry. We went to Health World in Barrington Illinois and saw a real BIG FOOT!

We had a great time at the Cernan Space Center on June 1, 2000.
We had lunch at the Astro Cafe!

Equipment

We were able to buy computers, printers and digital cameras over the past 3 years.
The purchase of a digital camera was the biggest technological event at Randolph School. Several teachers have started to use them in many innovative ways.  This web page is just one of them.

Supplies and Instructional Materials

Students built and launched model rockets after school.  Students received copies of the book October Sky autographed by the author, Homer Hickam.  The students learned about a boy that used the science fair to go to college.  That was quite an achievement in a coal mining town.
Mr. Lopatka ordered October Sky books from Shaver's Book Store in Huntsville, Alabama.  Mr. Shaver had each book personalized by the author, Homer Hickam.  We saw the movie with DVD sub titles and then we read the book.  The book was better than the movie.  We purchased a 7 foot dinosaur and assembled it in the science lab.  The Dinosaur then went on a tour of Randolph school.  Pre school room had it for a week, then it went to first, second and third grade.

 Summer Web page Program

The Aerospace students will be taking more digital images on field trips and then composing web pages. We were able to use NASA funds to connect 12 rooms to the Internet, so that the summer program could become a reality.
